This talented author and gay activist was born on November 28, 1944 in Hanover, Pennsylvania, USA. At one time, she was in a relationship with Martina Navratilova, and later with Martina’s ex.
In my younger days, I carried a picture of the gorgeous Rita Mae Brown in my wallet. Rita Mae (in her modesty) asked us to carry her picture. I think it was on the back of her novel
I read and re-read “Rubyfruit Jungle.” She has been an iconic lesbian (until she took up fox-hunting). Harassing a beautiful animal has reduced her in stature, but I admire her as a writer.
I challenged her to state why, after fighting for humans to have the fullness of life, she would become a fox hunter. She wrote an email back – I was surprised. She thanked me for my compliments (and the picture I carried of her), but her reasons for fox-hunting were invalid (in my opinion). I feel you can’t say ‘you love animals’ and have a cat and then go out and harass a beautiful creature like a fox.
I am also blogging my favourite Rita Mae quotes: She is really quite witty and certain has wisdom (except when it comes to harassing foxes). I am greatly indebted as a lesbian for her activism for homosexual rights. Her outward show of Amazonian strength in these matters is still remembered fondly.
Rita Mae is known as the bestselling author of a number of novels, including:
- Rubyfruit Jungle (1973)
In Her Day (1976)- Six of One .-Southern Discomfort-Sudden Death-High Hearts-Bingo (a sequel to Six of One)-Venus Envy–Dolley-Riding Shotgun-Loose Lips (2000 (set between Six of One and Bingo)-Alma Mater (2002)-The Sand Castle (2008)
HERE ARE MY FAVOURITE RITA MAE QUOTES:
—-If you don’t like my book, write your own. If you don’t think you can write a novel, that ought to tell you something. If you think you can, do. No excuses. If you still don’t like my novels, find a book you do like. Life is too short to be miserable. If you like my novels, I commend your good taste.
—You can’t be truly rude until you understand good manners.
–One of the keys to happiness is a bad memory.
–Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment.
— The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four people is suffering from a mental illness. Look at your 3 best friends. If they’re ok, then it’s you.”
Learn to love. Your heart isn’t breaking. It hurts because it’s getting larger. The larger it gets, the more love it holds.”
Alas, Rita Mae, “learn to love” and leave the innocent foxes alone. It is not the “Sport of Kings,”
nor the “Sport of Queens,” but a “Sport of mean(ies).”
