The son of deceased preacher, Rev. Billy Graham, does not understand his ridiculous and unfounded comments about transgendered persons and toilets in North Carolina. Maybe, like so many creepy right-wing Christians, he does understand but like to spout homophobia. His recent comments are regarding the NBA removing the All-Star Game from Charlotte, N.C. (and rightly so!). North Carolina has made it impossible for transgendered persons to use public toilets. They MUST use the washroom of the gender on their birth certificates. How can a male born but woman identified person (with or without surgery) and female hair and attire use a male washroom? She would be beaten to a pulp. And, have the “intelligent” law makers of N.C figured out that for years, transgendered people have used the appropriate bathroom and not ONE incident has been reported.
Before I forget, THANK YOU NBA.
Look at the words of Franklin – he equates transgendered persons with pedophiles and “sexually disturbed persons).
It’s a shame that the NBA announced today that they’re pulling their 2017 All-Star Game from Charlotte, NC. The fact is this—the North Carolina legislators and Governor Pat McCrory are exactly right for protecting the state’s women and children from pedophiles and sexually disturbed people who are looking for opportunities to take advantage. This is basic common sense, but the NBA cares more about being perceived as politically correct and catering to sexual activists who are trying to use this situation as a scare tactic to gain leverage to change North Carolina’s law. I think the NBA needs to realize that the safety of women and children is far more important than a ball game. They have every right to have their games anywhere they chose, but to move out of North Carolina to try to “punish” the state for protecting women and children is wrong. There are millions of Christians who love to watch basketball—and I’m one of them—but I can tell you now, I’m not going to watch their All-Star Game and I hope thousands of others will tell them that they’re not going to watch either. You can let the NBA know on their Facebook page that you’re not going to watch. And we need to let the sponsors of this All-Star Game know that we don’t agree with this decision and don’t have to buy their products. – (Franklin Graham)
I responded as below to his comments in Gay Star News:
Sorry, but we LGBTI folks do not buy into your lies and fear mongering.
Please contact Gay Star News with ONE CASE of a transperson attacking a woman or child in a public toilet. Up to this stupid fear mongering, how many disguised pedophiles and sexually disturbed individuals came into female toilets? As to sexually disturbed, you need to direct your attention to the sexually disturbed males who molest women and commit incest within their families. These are statistics that you can quote.
I quoted from The Atlantic and asked the reverend to look at the worse enemies of children: those who molest and beat up women – and – those straight males that commit incest against their own children. Here is a second comment that I made:
One in three-to-four girls, and one in five-to-seven boys are sexually abused before they turn 18, an overwhelming incidence of which happens within the family. These statistics are well known among industry professionals, who are often quick to add, “and this is a notoriously underreported crime.”
Intentionally or not, children are protecting adults, many for their entire lives. Millions of Americans, of both sexes, choke down food at family dinners, year after year, while seated at the same table as the people who violated them. Mothers and other family members are often complicit, grown-ups playing pretend because they’re more invested in the preservation of the family (and, often, the family’s finances) than the psychological, emotional, and physical well-being of the abused.
Statistics from USA Dept of Justice 2012
It is estimated that one million violent crimes involving child victims are reported to the police annually and Child Protection Services substantiates an additional 1.1 million cases of child abuse per year. Yet over ninety percent of crimes perpetrated against children go unreported.
Final comment: We cannot as LGBTI persons allow people like Franklin Graham and others to use their bigotry and ignorance to attack us. We need to fight back. Again, remember there has not been ONE case of a transgendered person attacking an adult woman or child. However, incest committed by straight males is rampant. Ah, Franklin Graham, if only the laws of America allowed you and others to go back to Old Testament VALUES: Where public stoning of adulterers, divorcees, gays, atheists, etc. was allowed.
