“Poussey Washington” Engaged: Samira Wiley & Lauren Morelli
Orange is the New Black actress Samira Wiley is engaged to her girlfriend, Lauren Morelli who is one of the show’s writers.
The couple, who have been dating for more than two years and the annoucement in February 2017 has been cause for much celebration.
Samira Wiley was born on April 15, 1987 in Washington, D.C
We know her as the enchanting “Poussey Washington” in Orange is the New Black blockbuster series. She attended The Juillard School of Performing Arts in New York City. Her interest was in theatre. In 2011, she played Maria in a production of Love’s Labour’s Lost by The Public Theater
Samira Wiley has two siblings: Aiyana Kai Ma’at and Joshua Wiley.
Samira was raised in a Christian household.
Her parents, Christine and Dennis W. Wiley, are the co-pastors of Covenant Baptist United Church of Christ. In my opinion, her parents are ‘true Christians.’ They have been praised as “pillars of the LGBT religious community.” Their church, Covenant Baptist Church, was the ONLY Baptist church in Washington, D.C that performed same-sex UNIONS as far back as 2007.
Thank Heavens for Friends
Samira seems to have got the role of Poussey thanks to a friend from Juillard, named Marco Ramiez, who was a writer for the show. Samira also discovered that another friend from Julliard was Danielle Brooks.
Danielle was playing Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson on the series. Samaria asked Danielle to help her rehearse for an audition – which she got. Yes! LOL.
What is also interesting is that Danielle Brooks also came from a similar Christian family, where her mother was a minister and her father was a deacon!
The Role Grows and So Does Fan Base
Samaria appeared in all twelve episodes of Season 1. As her character became darker and more violent, the “Poussey” character developed a large fan base. Samaria’s success has made her a prominent actress in Season 3 & 4.
Lauren Morelli: Happy Fiancée
Morelli, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is a graduate of Winchester Thurston School. Early in her education, she studied dance at Marymount Manhattan College in New York, until a back injury ended her career in dance.
Lauren is a talented writer – that had us glued to OITNB. She wrote the 12th episode of Season 4 which featured Samaria’s character. She grew up in Pittsburg, Pennyslavia. She studied dance at Marymount Manhattan College, New York, until a back injury ended her career. It seems that Lauren had other talents. In college she was inspired by a professor to pursue a career in writing.
It was in 2013 that Lauren got her break with Orange is the New Black. She was appointed ‘lead writer’ for two episodes of the First Season. She has stated that she fell in love with Samaria, but being married, her relationship with Samaria was platonic. Samaria was a friend who helped her through her realization that she felt a love for women. The follow year (2014), Lauren filed for divorce from her husband of two years. On October 4, 2016, Lauren announced her engagement to Samaria.
Out Magazine has a great article on their relationship.
