Sheena and Kai fell in love in Singapore, in a country that is struggling to provide further freedoms to gays and lesbians. The Chinese community is the dominant culture, with many professing to be Christian. Sheena and Kai met at a Christian gay supporting church and they wanted a Christian marriage. They chose New York and travelled there with a friend and was supported by a Singapore friend working in the city. They chose the Metropolitan Church and it’s pastor, Rev. Stephen Parelli, to perform the happy nuptials in 2010.
The couple chose as their theme, “authentically playful.” Keeping with this idea, they were married by the Hans Christian Andersen statue. The couple recited vows that they had wrote for the occasion and Kai surprised her bride with a song. All this happiness was witnessed by a group of guest or family “Muppets.” The scene was so delightful that passersby took pictures and congratulated the married couple. We add our congratulations and best wishes to them.
Now, it is three years later and seven countries have legalized same sex marriage since Sheena and Kai married….yippeee!
