Dee woke up to someone shaking her.
“Happy New Year’s Eve.”
It was Ruth.
“Can it really be 7 pm? That’s an eleven hour sleep, Ruth.”
“Time flies when you’re having fun.”
After showering, the two women ate in the Mess. Around them, Vietnamese maids prepared for Tet. They laid out food and drinks, while others decorated the tent with streamers and Vietnamese language signs. They spoke in low whispers and quickly retreated when their work was done.
The phone rang and a nurse picked it up.
“Is either one of you, Dee?”
Dee looked surprised as the phone was handed to her.
“Dee, it’s Chuck in Graves. Happy Tet!”
Dee was excited at hearing his voice.
“Hi, Chuck, how are you?”
Dee was aware of Ruth grinning at her.
“I have someone here who wants to talk with you.”
Dee wanted to squeal with delight.
“Oh, my goodness.”
Ruth gave Dee a thumbs up gesture of approval.
“Oh, Yes, Chuck, I really miss you?”
“Good cover, Army girl. I’ll be flying in and out of your base tonight. Don’t hold your breath for a truce.”
“Dee, if I’m around at midnight, let’s grab a moment, if we can.
“Oh, yes, Chuck.”
” If not, kiss a cherry blossom, the symbol of love.”
“Can’t wait to see you, Chuck. I miss you so much.”
“So, it’s Chuck?” Ruth called in Dee’s direction. “Describe the lucky man to me.”
The phone was dead and Dee now, was red.
Dee stared at Ruth, her face burning with embarrassment.
Dee had no idea what Chuck looked like
“His description is beyond words, and if I did describe him, you just wouldn’t believe me!”
Ruth laughed. “With your looks, you could get any guy. I bet he’s attractive!”
“Dee, you have that look of love in your eyes. You’re one lucky girl.”
“Yes, I am!”
“So, here’s to a Happy New Year, Dee.”
