A member of the Rebel Brigade Knights of the Ku Klux Klan waits for the start of a cross lighting ceremony on private property near Martinsville, Virginia, USA, July 2, 2011. The Invisible Empire is experiencing a revival in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Three chapters of the Ku Klux Klan have reemerged in the state, holding rallies, lighting crosses, and seeking new members. Anger over gay rights, racial changes in the population, and a black president are frequent refrains at these rallies. Yet Klan members say they are not about hate, but about taking pride in their own race. ‘The blacks have the NAACP [The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People], the Mexicans La Raza, and the Jews have the ADL [the Anti-Defamation League],’ says Stan Martin of the Rebel Brigade Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. ‘We whites have the Ku Klux Klan.’ (EPA/JIM LO SCALZO)
Wearing white clothing with a red cross is despicable when it was the symbol of the Temple Knights who cared for the poor and minorities. There are so many right wing Americans (some call themselves Christian) that are basically hateful people. If you go on to their sites and some have “Family Values” in their titles, while others have “Impeach the President” etc. you will find really hateful and vicious comments – directly or indirectly – towards the poor, minoriites, Jews, Gays/Lesbians, immigrants, Muslims, etc. etc. While the KKK may hide behind masks, and commentators may hide under internet names, there are still blantant people out there, one is the Rev. Scott Lively, whose homphobic venom has now got him into being charged with “Crimes Against Humanity” in a Massasschuttes’ Court. Twice denied his appeal that it is his right to free speech, Lively subsequently has gone to Russia to meet with the Russian Orthodox Church and to sell his book which claims homosexuals were in Hitler’s inner circle and caused the death of millions of Jews. This is actually historical lies. Hitler in 1935 told his Nazi party that anyone found in the military or SS would be executed if it was discovered he or she was a homosexual.
