Anytime I write about Canadian lesbian idol, kd lang, I receive visitors from all over the world. My hit article was entitled “kd lang’s girlfriends.” I have written at least four articles on kd. I admire her for her great voice, her Buddhist philosophy and for coming out in 1992 – way ahead of great lesbians such as ellen and Melissa Etheridge.
A New Love or Great Friendship?
Each time kd broke up from a relationship, I wished her well and I do again. There is speculation, and it is only speculation, that kd (52) is friendly and might even be dating Heather Edwards. Heather and her husband N. Murray Edwards separated in 2013. they had been together for approximately eleven years. Kd and Heather share many things in common: love of sushi, Buddhism and charitable works. If they are just platonic friends, I am happy for them. During a break up time, people need friends.
Kd – a short biography
On November 2, 1961 Kathryn Dawn Lang came into the world. She was born in Consort, Alberta in a beautiful province that raises beef cattle and has extraordinary beauty. Alberta is home to the Rock Mountains with such beautiful places like Maligne Lake and Lake Louise. KD’s mother was a teacher and piano lessons were part of growing up. KD’s parents split up when she was 12 years of age and music was one of her ways to deal with the pain.
While attending Red Deer College, KD appeared in a production about the country singer, Patsy Cline. After graduating from college, Lang linked up with musician and songwriter, Ben Mink, and they formed a group called the Reclines in Patsy’s honour. The rest is history. For a while, kd may have been considered to be a country and western singer, but she was constantly true to herself and motivated to explore other genres. Her fame grew. One of her fans was the legendary singer, Roy Orbison, who asked her to sing a duet with him. “Crying,” was an enormous success and that collaboration won them both a Grammy Award for the Best Country Collaboration with vocals in 1989. My favourite kd song is “Hallelujah,” I tire of listening to it. She sang it during the 2010 Canadian Olympics.
kd is One Attractive Woman!
It comes as no surprise that someone as attractive and interesting as kd, would have had some high-profile relationships. She dated Julie Cypher. Julie was in a relationship next with Melissa. They broke up in 2000 ( a month after ellen and Ann Heche split).
In 1996, kd met openly lesbian singer, composer ,actress Leisha Hailey, and they lived together until the relationship ended in 2001. Hailey from 2003 to 2009 starred as Alice Pieszecki, a bisexual journalist, on the L Word.
Then there was the famous photo shoot for Vanity Fair that had her sprawled in a barber’s chair, with supermodel Cindy Crawford sitting astride her in a swimsuit and giving her a wet shave. Asked by a male journalist what was going through her mind at the time, lang replied: “Pretty much what would have been going through yours in the same circumstance, I imagine” In 1996, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
Singer k.d. lang and her long-term girlfriend Jamie Price have ended their relationship after eight years. Lang and Price are said to have met back in 2003 through a Buddhist teacher. Both lived in California, in a domestic partnership which creates community property rights in a relationship, along with spousal support. It also allows each person to make health care decisions for each other. (Now, in 2023 California has legalized same-sex marriage). Lang and Price have so far given no reason for their split.
Kd has spoken on many occasions about how natural it was to be gay. Her family had four kids and three of them were gay. Kd thinks that her father (who died in 2007) was in her words “a bit gay.” Kd credits her mom with being very liberal in spite of being a devout Christian.
Conclusion: I’ll leave you with kd’s song A Right to Love. (And this you are wished kd).
The Right to Love”
My love and I ask little of the world
The right to sigh together in the rain
And walk with heads up in the sun
And share our joy and our pain
And yet they said that we were wrong
We hadn’t the right to our love
That this love was shameful to see
And yet we treasured our love
And so we go our solitary way
Indifferent to the cold unfriendly stares
Indifferent to the whispered talk
We don’t care at all
We have all we need
As long as we can be together
We find our consolation in each other’s eyes
That sweet look of wonder
We know we have earned the right to love
We know that we have earned
that precious right to love
