Most of us probably maintains our car more than we do our own body.  Cars can be replaced and a new one takes it place, but our bodies are meant to last our life time.  It wasn’t until I was away house/pet sitting, did I encounter a juicer/blender and a book of recipes.  They say, “When the student is ready, the guru comes.”  I started gingerly – trying a type of juice every other day.  I experimented.  You will notice from the images that often vegetables and fruits and mixed together.    What is great about juicing is that there is so much variety involved!!!

Introduce Juicing Into Your Life

Maybe one or two juice drinks on the weekend would be a loving action for YOU.  Heavens, we spend so much time of serving and loving others.  If we truly knew the benefits of juicing, then most of us would make an effort to introduce it slowly into our life style.

Benefits:

Fruit and vegetable juices retain most of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals (phytonutrients) that would be found in the whole versions of those foods. These nutrients can help protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer,  and various inflammatory diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis. Valuable compounds called flavonoids and anthocyanins are abundant in a variety of fruits and vegetables and  guard against oxidative cellular damage.   (Dr. Oz)

Juicing
helps you absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables. This is important because most of us have impaired digestion as a result of making less-than-optimal food choices over many years. This limits your body’s ability to absorb all the nutrients from the vegetables.

Here are a couple of other thoughts on the power of juicing.

  1. It supplies you with a variety of vegetables that you normally might not use (kale, spinach, celery, alfalfa sprouts).  Don’t fret about having to spend time looking for these – just use vegetables around you.

2.   Vegetable juicing provides good probiotics that help your gut/digestive tract. Most of us don’t know this but a third of our immune system is located in our digestive tract.  Studies have found that leeks and bananas improve this good bacteria in the gut by 133 million.  Even if you are NOT vegetable juicing include these vegetables to eat on your plate: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, radish, asparagus and rutabaga. (turnip).  They are a medicine: put them in stews, stir-fries and nourish yourself and those you love.  Vegetable juicing removes excesses of protein, fat and acid wastes from your body.

Fruit Juicing:

Fruit juicing helps the body to cleanse.  Watermelons can be sliced and put into a blender together with their seeds and rind.  After juicing strain and just drink the liquid.  Watermelon is an excellent cleanser.

GREEN JUICING (using fruits and vegetables)  There are recipes. 

Green juices stimulate cells and rejuvenate the body.  They build red blood cells.

Green juice is a convenient and quick way to get an energizing hit of phytonutrients – all those good-for-you vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll and antioxidants. … A juice is made by extracting the fiber (or pulp) from fruits and vegetables in a juicer/blender so that we’re only left with a completely liquid drink.

How do you juice kale leaves?

Feed the raw spinach and kale leaves into the feeding funnel of your mechanical juicer, followed by the cucumber pieces. You will need at least one whole medium-sized cucumber, 3 to 4 cups each of chopped spinach and kale to get a glass of fresh juice.

Cilantro Apple Green Juice

This green monster is loaded with calcium, iron, and vitamin K (thanks to the kale). The puckery citrus adds vitamin C, too. Don’t forget cilantro, whose leaves are antibacterial and anti-inflammatory.

SERVINGS: 1

2 green apples       2 stalks celery       2 lg kale leaves

1 med cucumber       ¼ c fresh cilantro      ½ lemon, peeled

PRESS all ingredients through a juicer in batches. Stir and serve immediately.

NUTRITION (per serving): 175 cal, 5 g pro, 51 g carb, 1 g fiber, 32 g sugars, 1.5 g fat, 0 g sat fat, 82 mg sodium

Here’s a little-known factoid: The bright green leaves of basil are mildly sedative. Basil has long been used as a remedy for indigestion, and the leaves are packed with anti-inflammatory oils that can help relieve pain from arthritis and irritable bowel syndrome.

Add in the hydrating power of cucumbers—they’re 95% water!—and you might just decide you don’t need that ibuprofen after all.

1 c fresh basil leaves          1 lg cucumber

1 lime, peeled                      1 green apple

PRESS all ingredients through a juicer in batches. Stir and serve immediately.

Healthy Fat Loss

Fruits and vegetables basically have no calories – so they are helpful in weight loss.

Healthy fat loss comes from making diet and lifestyle changes that you can sustain long-term. Eat a variety of foods, limit added sugars and foods high in empty calories, watch your portion sizes and add regular exercise into your daily routine. Stay away from fad diets that eliminate entire food groups and aren’t nutritionally safe. Because a juice fast could potentially slow your metabolism, it may be easier to gain weight once you’ve finished your cleanse. Set realistic weight-loss goals and remember that your overall health is more important than the number on the scale.

Juicing is also great if you are on a healthy path as a result of alcohol or drug addiction.   We all need healthy minds and bodies.  We deserve to love ourselves – we are worth it.
