Let me start by saying that in the USA, marriage is a civil contract and does not need the blessing of a religious establishment. Marriages may be carried out in mosques, temples, synagogues and churches, but it the civil record that legitimizes. However, right-wing Christians and others have made marriage equality a “God” issue, but the lawyers against same-sex marriage may or may not use this line of argument. Most of the arguments will be based on the American Constitution that includes states rights.
Jesus is on Trial
The LGBTI community, its supporters are lined up with their rainbow flags, American flags and banners and on the opposing lines are American flags, crucifixes (Roman Catholic) and crosses, and their banners and Bibles. Jesus was concerned that his disciples, especially Peter, know who he was. He did not want to be remembered by miracles alone, but by his words – all of them based on Love God, Love Neighbour, Love self. In fact, a lawyer in the Parable of the Good Samaritan asks Jesus how to enter the Kingdom and gets the three-love answer. So, in essence, every thing boils down to love. “God is love.” John 1.
Let’s Take the Same Crucifix and Put Two Different Sides Under it.
This man’s likely testimony. I am a Roman Catholic one our church has a crucifix (Jesus on the cross. I love Jesus. I know he loves me. I want to stand against gay marriage. Homosexuality in the Bible is called an abomination or a sin. Paul, the disciple to the Gentiles, wrote Romans 1:27
In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. And in 1 Timothy 1:10
for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers–and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine.
The Vatican states that homosexuality is ‘disordered’ but tells me to “love the sinner and not the sin.” I stand for morals in a decadent society and I’m marching to protect children. I am married to a woman and I have kids.
The Christian Homosexual
I am a Roman Catholic GAY man and I carry a crucifix. I identify with the suffering and false accusations of Jesus who was beaten and abused because of his truth. I am sinful unlike Christ, but I try to live my life following his example by not judging and loving everyone. I love Jesus and I know he loves me. I can prove this by his Parable or Story of the Good Samaritan. You see, Jesus was aware of the marginalized that are abused by the right-wing religious authorities. In His day, the Pharisees classified people and dietary laws into “clean” and “unclean.” Lepers were unclean, as were women who gave birth. Samaritans were unclean because they were not Jewish. I am the modern day Samaritan, but Jesus made the Samaritan the hero of the story over the two Jewish priests who walked by the injured man. If I love God, my neighbour and myself, Jesus has promised me entry into the Kingdom.
I am aware of the Scriptures. Leviticus was written 3,500 years ago and we are more aware than the writer. Homosexuality has been in existence since the dawn of humans and in every country. We must remember that there are 100 abominations: eating shrimp or pork, cutting a male’s hair or beard, stoning a non-virgin on her wedding night, etc. etc.
Christians like to point out that homosexuality is condemned in the New Testament, but Jesus never mentions homosexuality, but does comment on infidelity, divorce, lust, etc.
The Writings of Paul
Paul never met Jesus, but it was his job to convert the pagans of Rome and Greece to Christianity. Paul wrote about the immorality (as he saw it) of false gods, women war captives placed here as prostitutes in the temples. He also refers to a common sight on the streets of Corinth: long-haired male prostitutes (female prostitutes had short hair), 1 Cor 11:14. Temple prostitutes of both genders were available as conduits to the gods and goddesses who relished and blessed a variety of sexual acts. Men with men, men with women, women with women. These acts are NOT to be associated with the LGBT community that wants to bond with one person in the fidelity of marriage. Furthermore, I want the rights that come with marriage equality.
