Jennifer Azzi is a renowned athlete and holds a gold Olympic medal as a member of the 1996 USA basketball team. She is also a very successful female coach of the female University of San Francisco’s team. Recently, Jennifer came out at the Fairmont Hotel as a married lesbian. She was at the Fairmont to honor Warriors President Rick Welts as a gay model. In her coming out speech, Jennifer announced that she is married to female Blair Hardiek, one of her assistant coaches.
The Need to be Authentic
At age 47, Jennifer stated that she had “ “lived a long time not being 100 percent honest. I don’t know why we do that, but we do that.” She said that Rick Welts has inspired her to live an authentic life.
“Tonight was so powerful,” Azzi said by text Thursday night (March 31, 2016). She stated that there is nothing more powerful than living the truth. However, USF is a Catholic University and it will be interesting to note their reaction.
Azzi and Hardiek were married in August. Last month, Azzi’s USF team reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 1997 season.
USF and Dignity of Each Person
‘At USF, we respect the dignity of each person,’ Athletic Director Scott Sidwell said. ‘We are a community of inclusive excellence. We have a commitment to Jennifer, to our students, our staff, women’s basketball program and the athletics department.’
Coach Azzi has led the university basketball program for six seasons. This year the Dons had a record of 21-12, winning their first West Coast Conference tournament title. The team earned its first NCAAA tournament berth since 1997, eventually losing to Stanford University 85-58.
