Apr 202013

The first laws in modern times recognizing same-sex marriage were enacted during the first decade of the 21st century. As of April, 2013, THIRTEEN countries (ARGENTINA, BELGIUM, CANADA, DENMARK, ICELAND, NETHERLANDS, NORWAY, PORTUGAL, SPAIN, SOUTH AFRICA AND SWEDEN and now, URUGUAY, NEW ZEALAND

Nine states in the United States allow same-sex couples to marry.  Parts of Brazil and Mexico are also to be included.

And the progress for human rights regarding same-sex couples are already waiting in Bills (proposed, pending or passed).  Let’s get ready to cheer for the following countries:
images-17Andorra, Columbia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Nepal, New Zealand, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and Uruguay….and there are parts of Scotland, Australia, Mexico and the United States that are on board. Ireland has to call a general referendum to change any significant laws.

Africa poses a threat to gay LGBT rights.  United States Right Wing Evangelists pour money into training preachers and backing the media with dollars.   These ‘Christians’ promote the idea that homosexuality is a ‘western disease’ and quote the ‘selected’ biblical passages.  Thank God for Human Rights groups that monitor and report the violence against homosexuals in these African countries.

There are still countries that have the death penalty in force for individuals caught in homosexual acts.

93 nations in the world still legally punish homosexuality. In 7 of these – Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Nigeria, Mauritania – gays and lesbians are punished with the death penalty.

It is hard for religious zealots to realize that all global children should have human rights, which in my mind, is ‘loving your neighbour’ a verse to be found in all religions.
