When I think of an American civil rights hero, I think of Martin Luther King and for a heroine, I think of Rosa Parks. There are many others, of course. When I think of a lesbian heroine who opened doors and gates in Hollywood, I think of ellen.
When compared to Dr. King (who was murdered) and Rosa Parks who was thrown into jail, ellen’s struggle seems lesser. However, in coming out as a lesbian, both as the character in the show Ellen and in her own life, ellen found the show cancelled. Oprah, who chose to be the show’s therapist received death calls. Such was the violence and reaction to such a public coming out. When Time put ellen on its cover, I made sure to get a copy.
Being honest in her coming out, good karma came her way. In 2003, when DeGeneres’s daytime talk show, “Ellen: The Ellen DeGeneres Show” (2003) proved to be both a critical hit and a commercial success. Along with good ratings, the show has won unprecedented kudos from the industry, winning 15 Emmy Awards in its first three seasons on the air and becoming the first talk show in TV history to win the Emmy Award for Outstanding Talk Show in its first three seasons.
Ellen became so popular that she found hosting the Grammy Awards in 1996 and 1997. She went on to host Primetime Emmy Awards in 2001 and 2005. In February 2007, she had the ultimate TV awards show gig, hosting the Oscars. This success was probably not in the dreams of a sixteen year old ellen when her parents divorced. Born on January 26, 1958 in Metairie, a town near Louisiana, USA, this 5 ft 71/2 inch (1.71m) blond with blue eyes has been a Cover Girl Make Up inductee.
While ellen will wear makeup, she won’t wear a dress or a skirt and she refuses to wear ear rings. Instead, her trade mark is sneakers and pants. ellen sense of fun and play is what people need when faced with dullness and a world often involved in hatred and violence.
On August 16, 2008 ellen and Portia de Rossi were officially married in California. It is apparent that they are very much in love. They each have their own charities, but they share a love for animals. The world is a better place because of them. They are loving and positive and I always enjoy ellen’s parting message on each show, “be kind to one another.” Their lives have done so much to break down barriers towards homosexuals. I am proud to blog them.
