Females in both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic face continued violence. According to the United Nations, there has been an escalation in sexual assault and exploitation including rape, sexual slavery, early marriage and survival sex.
Both countries have been going through conflicts that results in displaced people. The most vulnerable of displaced persons are women, children and the elderly. United Nations’ camps have up to who have fled in small fishing boats across the Ubangi River to escape the fighting in Central African Republic. Many of the women and girls have been raped. The Democratic Republic of Congo has become known as the “rape country of the world.”
Rape kits are needed to prevent HIV. They cost $129 AUD. Perhaps, between a few of your friends, this could be a Christmas gift to the girls and women who have suffered extreme brutality.
