The ‘gayest’ drink of all!

images-16Homosexuality is illegal in Cameroon, but two men in November, 2011 were convicted of “looking gay” and had already spent a year in prison.  Then, on January 7, 2013, a court overturned the conviction. “Looking gay,” was based on their cross-dressing and wearing make up.  It is reported that they were also sipping “Bailey’s Irish Cream” alcohol.  I guess ‘real men’ drink hard liquor or beer!

The men’s lawyer, Alice Nkom, who also campaigns for gay rights, said the court’s decision had been expected.  The men were not actually seen or caught in a sex act, which is against Cameroon law.

While the men won that case, three weeks earlier, the SAME court upheld the three-year jail term of 32-year-old Jean-Claude Roger Mbede, found guilty of homosexual conduct because he sent a text message to another man saying: “I’m very much in love with you.”

Nkom, who also defended Mbede, said she hoped the supreme court would overturn that ruling.

“A man cannot be found guilty of practicing homosexuality simply because he sent a message to another man to say he loves him. At least two persons of same sex must be caught doing the act before they are arrested and convicted.”

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said at the time that the criminalization of homosexuality in Cameroon was incompatible with international human rights law.

Homosexuality is illegal in many African countries. In Cameroon, the penalties range from six months to five years in jail. In 2011, there were 12 convictions.

Gays/Lesbians in Cameroons, here are some things to avoid, by paula key (proud lesbian)

-1) At Christmas time, avoid the carol,  “Don we now our gay apparel.”   2) Don’t invite a Scottish gay to dance “the Gay Gordon!”  3) Don’t play the cartoon, “The Flintstones,” in the opening song, there are the words, “We’ll have a gay old time!”

4) Don’t watch or play a song from West Side Story, where Natalie Woods sings, “I feel pretty and witty and gay, and I pity anyone who isn’t me today!”

Cameroon people:  Psychiatrists world-wide state that homosexuality is NOT  a) a disease   b) a mental illness or c) a perversion and they also state that homosexuality cannot be changed.  This means that a person is BORN a lesbian or gay.
