RIO DE JANEIRO – BRAZIL, MAY 15, 2013
The law of the land ignored the pressure of the Roman Catholic Church and the chief justice of Brazil, legalized gay marriage throughout Brazil. The country of 200 million have joined neighbouring countries, Argentina and Uruguay in providing equality of marriage for all. YIPEEE.
In the Brazilian Congress, a strong religious faction opposessame-sex marriage. The same argument is advanced: destruction of the family unit and the matter considered to be unconstitutional. However, the laws of most lands deem it unconstitutional to render one segment of the population as ‘unequal’ in the eyes of the law. These religious fanatics, unlike Christ, have their arms “closed” to gays.
In 2011, the high court ruled by a comfortable margin that same-sex civil unions should be allowed. But while such unions provide couples in Brazil with access to benefits like health insurance and the division of assets in cases of separation, the council’s decision provides same-sex couples who marry with the same standing as heterosexuals, allowing them, for instance, to take each other’s surnames and adopt children more easily.
Justice has triumphed over petty and hurtful ‘Christian laws.’ Britain and Ireland are next, with probably more countries getting on board. YIPPEEEE.
